Wow, what a crazy last month it has been! I am just now remembering to update, but on Saturday, April 17th, I got food poisoning. Well, we aren't sure what it was now, but we went to eat at our favorite burger place in Austin, "Mighty Fine", and my burger didn't taste right. I told Serg that burger tasted like fish and he probably thought I was just being a silly pregnant lady and finished my burger for me. About 5 hours later, I woke up around 2:30am with horrible nausea and violent vomiting. I vomited at least 8 times and Serg came in to check on me cause I felt like I couldn't breathe, it was so bad.
I was up all night feeling terrible and the entire next day, as well. I was still nauseous, had severe abdominal pain, had lower back pain, headache, and was so weak. I tried calling our insurance nurse line and didn't get an answer. I was in agony for a another few hours and Serg called the nurse line and got through. They told me to call my Doctor as this was an emergency! I had no idea! So, I called my Doctor's office and her calls had been transferred to another Doctor's nurse. She said that I really had to concentrate on not getting dehydrated cause if I didn't, I might start having contractions! She said food poisoning really sucks, but it really sucks when you are pregnant.
During all of this, we get a phone call that Serg's Dad had a heart attack! We were so shocked and scared! Serg's family kept us in the loop with all of the developments with his Dad.
Around 10pm, I really felt like I had a fever, too. I finally took my temperature and I had a fever of 100.3! I was so upset cause I had read that when you are pregnant and you have a fever, your baby has a fever, too! I tried calling my Doctor's nurse line again and didn't get answer! I was so worried about our lil "Sweet Pea" that I decided I would rather go to the hospital and have them laugh at me, than not go and have something happen to our baby! So, I told Serg we had to go to the ER and he took me around 11:30pm.
When we got the ER, there were a few people in front of me. I figured we would have to wait for hours so I was really shocked when a man came right out and put me in a wheelchair! He started wheeling me further and further away from the main hospital. He finally said "We are headed to Labor & Delivery!" I was so scared for our lil "Sweet Pea" that I started crying! I thought there was a chance that I was going to have to deliver that day! I was petrified cause I was only 20 weeks pregnant!
They checked me in and took my urine to make sure that looked okay. They hooked me up to a fetal heart rate monitor and said that "Sweet Pea's" heart rate was 192. I thought this was good since it was so high but the Doctor quickly told me that it was WAY too high and they like to see the heart rate around 120! The nurse reminded him that I am only 20 weeks and that heart rates are much higher right now in pregnancy and goes down the further along you get in a pregnancy.
They started me in IV fluids and ended up giving me almost 2 bags of fluid! They said the main thing is trying to make sure I am not dehydrated after all my vomiting cause that can cause contractions. They ran some blood tests and found out that my liver function was way off. They had thought it was food poisoning, but now they weren't sure since I had a fever and my liver function was off, neither of which happen with food poisoning. We ended up staying in the ER till about 5am, so about 6 hours.
We went home and I rested and took it easy for days. I felt so guilty that I couldn't really eat solid foods for days and then I was just eating very little and bland foods, at that. I was so worried that "Sweet Pea" wasn't getting the nourishment she needed!
I also felt so bad that I couldn't take my prenatal vitamin for a few days. The ER Doctor said not to take it cause it could make me nauseous again. I called my regular OB Doc and asked to have a follow-up appt a few days later. I am so glad I did cause when I went in there they said I looked terrible, so exhausted and pale. My blood pressure was 110/65! They ran blood tests again and my liver function was still off! And, one of the levels had even gone up since the ER! They said this was very odd and that my body really must have been walloped!
The nurse I saw at my OB office didn't think I had food poisoning at all, my rather something viral, maybe even Swine Flu! I don't think it was that cause it happened right in the normal time frame for food poisoning, which is 2-6 hours after eating. She said we will never know for sure what I had. When they got back the new blood tests, they said I was anemic! I later found out that this is pretty common in pregnancy.
It took me probably like a full week to really feel like myself again. I hate that this happened while I was pregnant, but they said that "Sweet Pea" was just fine. While we were in the ER, her heart rate went from a very high 192 to a much healthier 152. They said this was much better and that she had been in some distress since I was in distress. Oh, poor baby girl!
Serg's Dad ended up staying in the hospital for a few days. He had surgery and is doing so much better! We went down to Corpus as soon as we could after me getting sick, which was 5 days after his heart attack. We felt so bad that we couldn't get down to see him sooner, but we are so lucky that all of Serg's wonderful family was there with him and giving us updates!
